This year, with thanks to London Marathon Events, Blueprint for All took part in the 2024 Vitality Westminster Mile. Joined by hundreds of runners and community groups, we had a chance to share some of our upcoming work with the participants on the day and connect with Vitality’s community through our interactive art exhibition. The one-mile run gave us all an opportunity to quite literally stop and smell the roses, connecting with people of all ages and backgrounds.

Blueprint for All’s live art installation became a focal point of the day, sparking conversations and strengthening connections inspired by the work of our charity. Visitors and participants contributed through their reflections and experiences of the day, to create one beautiful collective effort.

The exhibit, put together by art teacher and wellbeing lead in secondary education, Finley Way, brought inclusion to the forefront of our work. We sat down with Finley to learn more about what it takes to unpack themes of wellness in a meaningful way.

“Taking part in the Vitality Westminster mile highlighted for me the importance of encouraging young people to participate in community-driven events—not only for their personal growth but for the positive impact they can have on the wider community. Seeing so many young people engaged in the live art experience was a reminder of how effective these opportunities can be.” — Finley Way, Wellbeing lead in Secondary Education.

The day itself was a frenzy of smiling faces joined through the collective joy of sports. Art has the power to transform lives by providing a safe and creative outlet for self-expression, helping young people explore their inner selves. To ensure that art and community events are inclusive, we must create spaces where everyone feels welcome and valued.

How do we ensure this sense of inclusion is continued in all our work, especially when that work involves young people?

  1. Start with small achievable goals that match individuals’ interests and abilities
  2. Incorporate games, challenges, and rewards to make these inclusive activities more enjoyable
  3. Involve young people in the planning process to give them a sense of ownership
  4. Highlight the personal growth that comes from community involvement. Celebrate the small achievements, and understand that a little progress each day adds up to big results.

“The Vitality Westminster Mile creates a unique opportunity for individuals to connect, learn, and grow,” Finley furthered. “I’m proud to have been part of this project and look forward to seeing how it continues to inspire and engage those who participated in the collective art experience.” Blueprint for All couldn’t agree more.
